1.5L with 5 spd manual for $1,700
Brand new tires, recent water pump (guy wasn’t sure if they did the timing belt, but I’ll check, shouldn’t be too hard to tell once I pop the top cover.)
The only serious issue it has is an infernal buzzing nois e from the glovebox. Checked it out, apparently the two plastic pieces that screw together to make the blower motor housing, one’s bowed and makes a lot of noise when vibrations make it to. I put some pipe insulation in there and it’s much better now. Perfectly acceptable for a sub $2k car.
As for the clutch/ transmission issue. Apparently these had an issue with the manual transmission related to the shifting mechanism itself. The shifter feels perfectly fine, so I’m guessing this particular car doesn’t suffer from that problem. The guy thinks it’s on the original clutch, but he’s only had it a year, and kne w the previous owner for about 7 or 8, so I’m guessing it’s been done at some point before 118k miles, it’s currently at.
However I did get a quote from a trans shop, and they’d charge $1,100 to do the clutch and replace the shifter mechanism . I figure less than $3k for this car after a potential clutch and trans repair is still a good deal.
Anyways. I learned that in 2001 you could still buy a manual transmission vehicle that didn’t have a tachometer.
This is some next level peasant status with 3 blank buttons on a Hyundai Accent!
Oh, and the last issue it has. Automatic fill ups don’t work at gas stations with it. I didn’t think too much of it, since my brother has an ‘08 Hyundai that has the same issue, but I wanna look into fixing, because it seems very particular about the angle of the nozzle and still doesn’t let you fill it up for more than about 5 seconds before the pump shuts off, even when doing it manually.
I remember the Integra also had the issue a little bit, because the rubber around the filler neck deteriorated, but all you had to do was apply a little upward pressure and it’d work just fine. Need to take a closer work at this though.

Could’ve had a V6.
I paid 2k for my clean 5-speed Maxima with less than 65,000 miles, and that included a set of brand new winter tires on OEM Alloys, so why an Accent? I didn’t actually follow the prologue to this, so please enlighten me.

Hopefully it won’t, this is the lowest miles car I’ve owned in a very long time so shouldn’t give me any crazy trouble. Small things I can live and deal with easily.

I didn’t want a V6, I hate transverse V engines and I’d prefer the gas mileage of a 4 cylinder. Surprisingly even coming from a Volvo T5, I’m not really wanting for power in this car, it’s got plenty for what it is.
That said, I’m buying this because the Volvo T5 I owned blew a head gasket was going to be $4k for a shop to do it. And since it was my only car and I live in an apartment, I didn’t really wanna do it myself (and didn’t have quite a few of the tools too, plus I still would’ve had to pay a machine shop to go over the heads, apparently they also had a tendency to warp so bad to need brand new heads ) so I sold it to a junkyard for $400 and bought this.

Looks good. If it’s a timing belt engine, and I can’t confirm that it’s had a new timing belt, then it gets a timing belt kit, water pump and all. Immediately. A clutch is not very difficult to replace. Can’t see paying for that. Be sure to have the flywheel resurfaced. And before you do anything with that stereo, please consider looking at Crutchfield to see exactly what fits in your car, then buying a couple pair of Alpine two-way speakers to replace the stock speakers.
There is my $0.02.

If it’s just the clutch itself, I’d probably do it, but if the transmission develops an issue as well, then I’d just have the shop do it since they’ll be removing the trans anyway.
As for the belt, since it’s single cam, if the belt doesn’t look brand new, I probably will end up replacing it since it’s an interference engine.
Definitely not gonna touch the sound system, this is the first car I’ve had in a while that had an aux input, I’m just gonna enjoy that for now :)

So pretty much cheap and reliable transportation above all else. I can understand that. It’s what I should have done if I weren’t so consistently unlucky with cars. Now I am certainly not saying you should have went with the enthusiast approved option, I was just curious since $1700 to me seems like quite a lot of money for an “ essentials” car, especially after hearing too many stories of interesting cars being bought for cheap.

There is only one direction you can take with mods.
The fuel filling thing might be a clogged vent on the filler tube or gas tank.

This was the first “big” car we bought new. Most of the cars at the time in India were the the Maruti 800, and that is smaller than the Yaris hatchback. But the colour choice was mine a light green called forest dew. My mom still has it, get to drive it every time I go home. The only difference I think ours had the 1.6l engine with I believe 105hp. Fun car though

Everything below that price point is typically sketchy. Significant issues or a shade tree engine rebuild, etc. This was kind of the happy medium between cheap and a relatively good history.

Apparently the 1.5 has 95hp, but it feels quick enough. One thing I love is how tiny all the parts on this car are. It makes my old ‘92 Civic look heavy duty with how much bigger everything was lol.

One day!
Yeah I was looking into the fill up thing recenlty. Luckily the coal canister is behind the bumper, not under the hood. My plan is to take it to a gas station, unhook the lines and use the air machine for tires to blow through the line and canister.

A clogged vent will trigger the auto shut off on the gas pump because the pressure in the tank is too high. I’ve had it happen when making large elevation changes in a short time, like driving from the coast up to the mountains. It takes a while for the tank pressure to equalize and then you’re stuck filling the t ank five seco nds at a time.

My low-mileage Mercury Sable, Datsun Pickup and Legacy wagon gave me quite a bit of trouble... The 300k+ mile Miata on the other hand just had it’s very first issue in the 3 years/60,000 miles I’ve had it. And that’s jus t a wheel bearing!

Replace the stock speakers with Alpines. Money well spent. Once you know the size, you can get the speakers for like $40/pair.
Timing belt on a new car is cheap insurance. Water pump, too.
Good luck!

I don’t blame you for snagging it. Hopefully you won’t have the issues mine had, but then again mine went from doing less than 10k miles per year to suddenly doing 70k per year, and it was a repo. I would bet yours will do better.
Does it have a/c? I can’t remember if you said it did or not. Mine did and it worked fine up until the temperature outside went above 90, after that it couldn’t keep up. It’s probably due to the huge expanse of glass on the hatch. Boy did it cut the power, though. I had to turn it off if I wanted to go uphill.
Also, I think 2 of the 3 switch blanks in that picture are for options you couldn’t get in the US. I think one was rear fog lamps. I believe the owners manual lists what they are.

It was a half joke. They’ve been rallying for over a decade, but normally when someone says “rally pedigree,” brands like Audi or Subaru come to mind, not the brand that’s generally associated with “I couldn’t afford a Honda”

I’ll have to check what speakers they were replaced with. It has aftermarket ones in there and a receipt in the glove box I’ll have to check out. Honestly haven’t bothered with the sound system yet, all I had was regular radio with the Volvo so I just got in the habit of not using it.

It has A/C and it’s been fine, routinely been above 90F the last few days, and I’ve never set the fan above 3 . But it’s the Coupe not the hatch so it doesn’t have as much glass.

“I couldn’t afford a Honda”
This is too true. The mechanical parts on this thing are so small compared to my ‘92 Civic I used to have, it’s hilarious . The PS pump is like half the size of the Civic and the CV axles look like twigs in comparison.

The parts couldn’t possibly be any dinkier than my Geo Metro. One person could pull the engine in that thing by hand.
(That's not an exaggeration. A fully assembled Metro engine weighs 130lbs)

2.0 Tibby swap.
K-Sport suspension upgrades.
Makes these into Auto-x rockets.
Source:
Owned a 2001 Accent Hatch.
Mine had 175k when I got it and was still on the original clutch/trans. The clutch started slipping after 6 months of hard abuse, which led to swapping the whole drivetrain instead of fixing the clutch.
Couldn’t complain, it was a riot to drive both on the street and on the track, and it averaged well over 30mpg.

No, it’s not slipping at all. I was just planning what I’d do for it, since it’s at 118k miles and the owner believes it’s on the original clutch. I doubt that, but I was just keeping that in consideration.

On the subject of filling up your car, it's possible a vent is plugged on the gas tank too. I had a Subaru with this problem but I didn't want to pull the gas tank because you have to pull out the rear end.

I looked into it, apparently you can just blow compressed air through the line going from the charcoal canister to the fi ller neck and that’ll clear it out.
